The road became fearsome
as I traveled alone.
Turn after turn,
but no closer to home.

I saw only untraveled woods
rising on either side.
I wished gravely for one
who could help me decide.

Thereupon longing transformed
when my soul did appear,
catching their breathe
from pursuing me here.

They tenderly carried
the trail of pieces I left—
of things I cherished,
of boons second-guessed.

To me, they said,
“Allow me to lead.
I will show you a way
foolhardy, but free.”

They warned of danger,
uncertainty, and woe
in exchange for solace
wherever I would go.

But the price was nothing
amidst that intimate embrace;
as we went on together
in this mysterious place.
